Resist ICE and support our neighbors!

All of us are appalled by the way ICE is instilling fear across our communities. The question is, how can we resist ICE, and support our neighbors? This week we are sharing one regional and two local actions:

Northeast, Mid-Atlantic, and Midwest regions

  • Boycott Citizens”: A grassroots effort seeks to force Citizens Bank to stop financing the two major private prison/detention center companies—CoreCivic and the GEO group. Leafleting at local bank branches has begun, and efforts are underway to connect with groups across the state and nation for more concerted action. The bank operates in Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan, Connecticut, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and also serves Delaware, Florida, Maryland, Vermont, Virginia, and Washington D.C..

Eastern MA and Southern NH

  • .De-ICE Hanscom:  Weekly Friday afternoon protests at Hanscom Airfield in the western suburbs of Boston, led by a coalition of groups, raise awareness of deportation flights ICE operates there.  The group also organizes attendance and public comments at every public meeting of the Massport Board, which governs all airports in the Commonwealth, to apply pressure to those in power. With over 100 attending the November meeting, Board members noticed!

Greater Boston Area

  • Mutual Aid:  Chelsea, Massachusetts is a predominantly Latino community heavily targeted by ICE. Activist Evenings, working alongside several churches and synagogues in Brookline/Boston, helps organize a steady stream of volunteers to work with LaColaborativa to deliver food to immigrants who have justified fears of leaving their houses.

Your community likely has similar efforts. You can find out about some through Mobilize, your local Indivisible chapter, through word-of-mouth, or by contacting local immigrant advocacy organizations.
