Force Multiplier’s
Defending Democracy Fund
The courts are on the front lines in the battle to defend democracy and resist autocracy. The Defending Democracy Fund comprises litigation groups like the ones below - Democracy Forward, Public Citizen, and Democracy Defenders Fund - leading the charge. They work together and separately to bring lawsuits that challenge the administration’s unconstitutional actions, and to defend the rule of law, the separation of powers, a free press, and free and fair elections.
Democracy Forward was founded in 2017 to hold the first Trump administration accountable and since then has been providing legal representation and expert counsel to the people and communities that make up our country — free of charge. It has won lawsuits for unions, nonprofit organizations, veterans groups, houses of worship, and more. Since the second Trump administration, Democracy Forward has brought together a unique coalition of hundreds of organizations to address the administration’s harmful policies affecting the American people.
Public Citizen was founded in 1971 to defend democracy and ensure that government works for the people, not big corporations. It brings suits when the government fails to do its job and petitions regulatory agencies to safeguard the public. Since Trump’s second inauguration, it has brought cases to protect information that DOGE was trying to access and to stop the freeze on foreign aid as a violation of separation of powers, which was favorably decided by the U.S. Supreme Court. Public Citizen has called for an investigation into Trump’s promotion of his own crypto coin meme, a probable violation of federal law that forbids the president from soliciting gifts. The group co-chairs a coalition of legal, good government, and grassroots groups combating attacks on the rule of law.
Democracy Defenders Fund, chaired by co-founder Ambassador Norman Eisen (ret), is dedicated to stopping the assault on our democracy, defending the rule of law, ending corruption, and protecting elections. The group has won landmark victories defending birthright citizenship and played a decisive role in ensuring the U.S. Supreme Court cleared the way for Prop 50 to go into effect in California. It has also secured victories for federal workers, and successfully sued to protect citizens’ private information from unconstitutional assaults by DOGE.
